The medical sector today cannot do without the use of plastics. It will come as no surprise that supply to this industry has to meet the strictest requirements. Besides the technical properties, the (chemical) cleanability is also of great importance. In addition, the material must be able to interact with the body without causing damage, i.e. biocompatibility.
Until May 2021, the defining directive for medical devices was laid down in Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC (MDD). That has now been revised in Medical Device Regulation EU 2017/745 (MDR).
The MDR focuses on medical devices that are produced or sold in Europe. When the products meet all MDR requirements, they are provided with a CE mark. These are very high requirements in terms of the technical properties of plastics and the required standards.
Our products are used in the medical world, for example in surgeons’ instruments that have to be sterilized afterwards. Electrical conductivity, fire-resistant properties, gamma radiation, and X-rays all come into play in medical equipment.
